Urge Incontinence (Leakage of Urine)

In the case of urge incontinence the patient suddenly and strongly has an urge to urinate. The patient often needs to urinate during the night.

There are different reasons for this problem including infections which cause minor problems or diabetes and neurologic disorder causing severe conditions.

These factors may lead to temporary or persistent urge incontinence conditions. The factors which may lead to temporary urge incontinence include:

  • Alcohol
  • Caffeine
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Foods which include high amount of sugar, acids and spices.

Urinary tract infections, constipation, pregnancy, menopause, hysterectomy and prostate cancer are medical conditions which may cause persistent urge incontinence.

There are 4 factors which affect the risk of developing urge incontinence including:

  • Gender
  • Age
  • Obesity
  • Other medical conditions

There are also some foods, drinks and medical conditions that can increase the risk of urge incontinence.

If urge incontinence problem is not treated properly it may cause skin problems and urinary tract infections as well as affecting patient’s personal life.

There is a wide variety of treatments for urge incontinence based on the severity of the disease. The treatments can be as simple as managing food and beverage intake in temporary urge incontinence or the application of Pessary or surgery in case of severe conditions.
