PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)

One of our most innovative and proven-to-be effective treatments is skin needling with platelet rich plasma.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) also known as autologous cellular rejuvenation (ACR) is an innovative skin needling treatment designed to stimulate your own body’s natural processes to speed up skin repair, rejuvenate skin tone and texture and fight back against ageing.

PRP is blood that has been processed so all that remains is concentrated and enriched platelets. In a completely natural process, the body reacts to the wounds by releasing growth factors that stimulate the production of new collagen and elastin. Stimulating collagen is a huge boost for skin beauty. Our collagen resources become depleted as we age, and without collagen, the skin loses volume and youthful plumpness. At FBW, we add PRP to our micro-needling treatments, allowing the platelet-rich plasma to go deep into the dermis where it can work most effectively and takes this skin rejuvenation technique to a whole new level.

The secret to this treatment is the platelet. Platelets are foundational in many of the body’s functions, especially where the skin is concerned. At FBW, our women’s health and beauty experts consider PRP the ultimate “body’s own” physiological product because it comes from the patient herself, it is safer and more natural than animal-derived or human donated products. PRP with skin needling is so highly regarded by our doctors as it:

  1. Promotes tissue regeneration and rejuvenation.
  2. Increases collagen production.
  3. Serves as a “biological glue” promoting tissue adhesion, especially in skin flaps, bone grafts, and trauma.
  4. Recruits other cells to the site of injury.
  5. Initiates vascular in-growth, strengthening veins.
  6. Induces cell differentiation.
  7. Promotes bone mineralisation.
  8. Aids in extra-cellular matrix formation.
  9. Is non-allergenic.
  10. Eliminates donor transmissible infections.

Is PRP for me?

PRP is the perfect answer for women seeking a natural way to enjoy younger looking skin at any age. There is nothing more natural than using your own blood to rejuvenate your appearance. The overall result is younger-looking skin with fewer visible signs of facial ageing. It is outstanding in the treatment and improvement of:

  1. Mild to moderate acne scarring
  2. Traumatic scars
  3. Photo-ageing
  4. Hyperpigmentation, dark spots, melasma
  5. Under eye wrinkles and loose skin
  6. Moderate skin laxity
  7. Fine lines and wrinkles
  8. Thinning hair
  9. Skin texture and pore size
  10. Stretch marks
  11. Hair regrowth
  12. Skincare product delivery

Skin needling with PRP for facial rejuvenation is an appropriate treatment for almost anyone but especially useful for women with darker skin. It is also a treatment with minimal side effects. Good general health and realistic expectations provide optimal results.

This treatment is not recommended for people who:

  • Smoke
  • Have skin cancer
  • Have liver disorders
  • Have problems with blood clotting

During an initial consultation, your doctor will discuss your facial rejuvenation goals to ensure that skin needling with PRP will help you safely achieve them.

What can I expect from a skin needling treatment?

Skin needling with the addition of PRP has been used clinically for skin rejuvenation for decades. The microscopic needles create tiny pinpoint puncture wounds in the skin. An obvious advantage of this treatment is the fact that the epidermis, the protective outer layer of the skin, is preserved. Skin needling can be used on nearly all parts of the body. At FBW, our most requested areas for skin rejuvenation are:

  • Face
  • Neck
  • Décolletage
  • Arms

How is the treatment administered?

At your appointment you will need to provide a blood sample which is then placed immediately in a centrifuge which separates your blood into platelet-poor plasma red blood cells and platelets and white blood cells. A topical numbing cream will then be applied and a handheld skin-needling device will be used to create hundreds of tiny channels in the skin. Then we inject and apply your PRP to your skin.

The high-speed motor causes the needle penetration to occur very quickly, which means it will feel more like a sandpaper sensation than needles. Scar treatments require longer needles which may produce more sensation. However, rest assured our experienced aestheticians will ensure that your skin is numbed and that you are comfortable throughout the treatment.

Pre-treatment do’s and dont’s for optimal results

To ensure optimal results, we recommend patients stay hydrated in the days leading up to and after your appointment. Your skin may feel dry after the treatment so increasing water intake will help to combat this. Taking Arnica tablets is also recommended. Arnica is sold commercially in tablet or cream form at health stores and chemists. Arnica tablets have been widely used as supplementary homeopathic treatments for bruises, strains and sprains, for pre and post-operative care and muscular pain.

To increase the effectiveness of the treatment, five to seven days prior patients should stop taking supplements that increase bruising and bleeding, omegas (such as fish oil), evening primrose oil, garlic, echinacea, St John’s wort, vitamin E, Nurofen, aspirin and drinking green tea.

Treatments and Results

Unfortunately with PRP results are not instantaneous and you can expect swelling and redness from the plasma for three to five days following treatment. The redness can usually be covered by makeup and most patients return to work straight after the treatment. Mild bruising is also possible.

Once this subsides, very little change will initially be visible yet over the following few weeks the platelets will stimulate the growth factors, which will assist in more collagen growth. Ongoing improvement in the skin can be observed up to 12 months after each treatment, depending on the rate of collagen production.

The number of treatments needed for full facial rejuvenation will depend upon the health and age of your skin. On average, we recommend two or three treatments, four to six weeks apart.

At FBW, skin needling with PRP is customised to each woman and her skin rejuvenation goals. Some patients may only require a single treatment, once per year whereas for optimal results for others would require a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-ageing, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at six week intervals.
