MonaLisa Touch
MonaLisa Touch is an innovative, non-surgical, non-hormonal treatment for vaginal dryness, also referred to as vaginal atrophy, not responding to conventional treatment or have contraindications for breast cancer.
How does MonaLisa Touch work?
MonaLisa Touch stimulates cells in the vaginal mucosa to promote collagen formation, cell regeneration and restoration of blood supply. This encourages the formation of healthy tissue.
MonaLisa offers an alternative to oestrogen therapy for vaginal atrophy. Many women opt to have this non-hormonal, non-surgical treatment because it is a quick and painless procedure performed in the consulting rooms that can have lasting results.
What is vaginal atrophy?
Vaginal atrophy, otherwise known as vaginal ageing or Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause (GSM), is a common condition in menopausal women.
In women affected by vaginal atrophy, the vaginal walls become thinned, reducing the natural elasticity and blood supply of the vagina. As a result, the vagina loses hydration and thickness. This can also cause a higher pH which may increase the risk of vaginal thrush.
Symptoms of vaginal atrophy include:
- Vaginal dryness or itchiness
- Painful intercourse and bleeding related to intercourse
- Urinary frequency and incontinence
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding and discharge
- Burning sensations and irritation of the vagina
Vaginal atrophy can affect many women:
- Around half of all postmenopausal women
- Women who have used the birth control pill for prolonged periods
- Breastfeeding mothers
- Women who experienced traumatic childbirth delivery
- Women who have undergone extensive perineal repair
- Women affected by breast cancer, especially if they are on aromatase inhibitor treatment (Tamoxifen)
How does The MonaLisa Touch treat vaginal atrophy?
MonaLisa Touch can counteract the effects of vaginal atrophy with a short, simple treatment that uses heat to stimulate the regeneration of vaginal tissue. Through this regeneration, MonaLisa Touch promotes the recovery of vaginal cells and restoration of vaginal wall strength and blood supply.
Through this regeneration and restoration, MonaLisa Touch can restore the natural pH balance of the vaginal mucosa. This can reduce vaginal atrophy symptoms, such as vaginal dryness, irritation and fissuring.
In some cases, the MonaLisa Touch treatment can help women to avoid surgeries, including incontinence, prolapse repair, revision of scar tissue, labiaplasty and vaginoplasty.
What does the MonaLisa Touch treatment involve?
For most patients, their MonaLisa Touch treatment consists of three 10-minute sessions at monthly intervals. MonaLisa Touch encourages collagen formation underneath the vagina mucosa and vulval skin. This helps to regenerate tissue and restore blood supply. In some women, additional treatments might be required.
How quickly will I see and feel results from The MonaLisa Touch?
Within 30 days after the initial session, there might be noticeable regeneration of the vaginal walls and the protective mucosa. A noticeable increase in hydration and elasticity can also occur, which is particularly important to patients seeking relief from intercourse pain.
