Colposcopy
At FBW Gynaecology Plus, our clinicians perform colposcopy to closely examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva for abnormal or precancerous cell changes. A colposcopy is commonly recommended following an abnormal cervical screening test, persistent HPV infection, or when further assessment of the cervix is required.
During the procedure, a specialised microscope called a colposcope is used to magnify the tissues, allowing your clinician to identify any areas that require closer examination. The colposcope remains outside the body and does not touch you. A speculum is gently inserted into the vagina, similar to a cervical screening test, and special solutions may be applied to highlight abnormal cells.
If an abnormal area is identified, a small biopsy may be taken for laboratory analysis. Most women experience only mild discomfort, and the procedure is usually completed within 15–30 minutes in our consulting rooms.
Colposcopy provides important information about the health of your cervix and helps determine whether monitoring, further investigation, or treatment—such as a LLETZ procedure—is required.
